What is platelet rich plasma?

Platelet rich plasma (PRP) is a concentration of platelets, a type of blood cell, suspended in the liquid component of blood, called plasma. It has remarkable healing and regenerative properties and is commonly used to promote wound healing but may also be used to treat hair loss.

How is platelet rich plasma obtained and used to treat hair loss?

A small amount of your blood is collected and processed in a sterile manner to obtain platelet rich plasma. The PRP is drawn into a syringe and injected into the areas of the scalp affected by hair loss after administering an anesthetic. Your hair is then washed and you may return home. Platelets, growth factors and other components of PRP help to stimulate the growth of hair follicles in the scalp. Treatment may be repeated every 3 to 4 months.

Can PRP be used along with hair restoration surgery?

Platelet rich plasma may also be used during and after hair restoration surgery. It is injected, sprayed or laid into donor site incisions from where hair grafts are obtained or at recipient sites that have been prepared to receive these grafts. This promotes healing, reduces scarring and facilitates uptake of the grafts.

What are the risks associated with PRP therapy?

Platelet rich plasma is rarely associated with risks and complications such as bruising from where the blood is drawn, temporary hair loss, and headache, immediately after the procedure, which can be easily treated.
