The signs of ageing are inevitable. And with skin being the largest organ we have, the signs of aging shows on our skin the most! But this doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything about it! In today’s world, there are many solutions to the signs of aging. One of these is a neck lift – a procedure which addresses the sagging neck that is associated with old age.
The procedure for a sagging neck is rather straightforward and safe. However, in this article we’ll go over what you can exactly expect during a neck lift and give you the information you need if you’re considering the procedure.
What is a Neck Lift?
Neck lift is a surgical procedure aimed to improve the appearance of the neck and the jaw by reducing the amount of sagging skin in the area. Neck lifts are also called cervicoplasty or platysmaplasty. The procedure is generally safe and takes roughly 2 weeks for it to properly heal and recover.
What’s the difference between cervicoplasty and platysmaplasty?
Cervicoplasty is surgery that targets the neck and involves platysmaplasty. Platysmaplasty specifically refers to a procedure that tightens and lifts the platysma muscle. Cervicoplasty usually involves a number of other procedures such as skin tightening or removal of excessive fat in the area.
Are there any risks involved in a neck lift?
Short answer, yes. However these risks are common in almost any type of surgical procedure. These include swelling, bruising, burning, inflammation and infection.
Going to a well-qualified, trusted surgeon will ensure that these risks are kept to a minimum. Following appropriate post-surgery advice will also help mitigate any potential risks.
How to prepare and what to expect for your surgery
Once you’ve committed to a surgery date, you’ll be advised to take care of yourself leading up to the procedure. This involves minimising the consumption of alcohol, stopping smoking and getting proper amounts of rest. You will also be asked to temporarily stop any blood-thinning medication such as OTC painkillers. Having a friend or close one drive you to and from the clinic is also strongly recommended.
The actual procedure takes about 2 to 3 hours. However, this is subject to change, depending on if you are having any other additional procedures with your neck lift (such as face lift, chin lift or brow lift).
To perform the procedure, your surgeon will place you under general anesthesia or intravenous sedation. They will then make small incisions behind your ears. Through these cuts, your surgeon will tighten your skin and neck muscles. This will give you the smoother and tighter skin you’re looking for.
Once this is done, the incisions are sewn up and a drain is placed on your neck to drain fluid. This drainage reduces swelling and discomfort after the surgery. You’ll then be sent home with bandages around your neck.
Post-surgery tips
As we mentioned before, platysmaplasty takes around 2 weeks to heal. During this time, you should take it easy and allow your body to recover. This ensures the healing process is smooth and without complication.
The first few days may be very painful for you so it’s recommended that you stay with a family member or friend to assist and look after you. You can also take painkillers to alleviate discomfort.
Placing ice on the surgery area will help reduce swelling and inflammation. You should also spend the first few nights sleeping on multiple pillows. This elevates your head and promotes blood flow. You might also be recommended to follow a liquid diet for the first few days after the surgery. You can continue eating a more normal diet once the swelling in your neck has gone down.
Feelings of tightness around the neck are also common after surgery. This sensation should dissipate after a couple of weeks. Normal activities can be resumed after these initial 2 weeks of healing, but physical exercise and movement should not be resumed until after a couple of months.
You’ll also be asked to return to the clinic a few times after surgery for check-ups and to remove stitches.
